I know what it feels like to be passed from doctor to doctor with no answers. For the past year, I have been struggling with many health issues, have had many tests done, and received no diagnoses. I have had problems with my health in the past; however, this past year I have had an overwhelming number of issues arise and have spent many hours in the doctor’s office. It’s frustrating, discouraging, and has left me feeling hopeless.
Finding Comfort in God’s Character
Even though I may have a long journey ahead, I am learning what it looks like to trust God with my physical health. Even though my health is uncertain, along with the rest of my life, I have found comfort in God’s word and God’s character. Above all else, God knitted me together in my mother’s womb and knows me better than anyone else. I know that I can trust him with my health because He created me.
God also promises to be with me always, in both the celebrations and sorrow. He is the writer of my story, and I must learn to find comfort, peace, and strength in Him and not my circumstances. Psalm 73:26 says, “my flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” Take heart in knowing that in your weakness, whether it is health related or not, God promises to be the strength of your heart.
Everything is Fleeting (Even Physical Health)
I am also being reminded constantly that everything on this side of heaven is fleeting, even my own body. We are all passing away, day by day, and death is inevitable for every human on earth. 2 Corinthians 4:16 says, “so we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day.” Even though my physical health is decaying, I have found comfort in knowing that my inner self is being renewed daily to look more like Christ. Additionally, this life is not our true home, and there will be a day when all things will be made new. I have found hope in Revelation 21:3-4 saying, And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” God is preparing a place for us where we can dwell with Him forever.
Sometimes The Answer is No
It is not wrong to ask God for healing. God does have the power to heal, but sometimes he may not choose to heal. All throughout the gospels, we see Jesus healing lepers, sick children, casting out demons, and even raising people from the dead. We also see that Jesus does not heal everyone.
We might not ever figure out why; however, we do know that God is good and that He is in control of our lives. Every day through God’s word and the people in my life, I am reminded that God does not promise me anything other than that He is the good portion, and that He will never be taken away from me. I find hope in knowing that one day I will meet Jesus face to face and pain and suffering will be no more.
