Do I struggle with Depression?

It is important to identify depression for what it is then to take the necessary steps to treat it.

Depression is a word that most people are scared of due to its stigma. Most people think depression looks like: not bathing, not getting off the bed, and feeling sad all the time. Though these are indeed symptoms of depression, it is not like this for many of us.

Depression is a mental health disorder that impacts your entire life - how you feel, what you think, and how you behave.

What it looks like differs from person to person so it can be tempting to write it off as something else or attribute the symptoms to external circumstances.

In a world of high achievers, type A personalities, and leaders, we are seeing more and more high functioning depression. The busyness, pressures, and overcommitments leave us feeling stressed and depressed.

How would a depression counselor in Atlanta benefit you?

Depression is something you can have like any other illness; depression does not define who you are. That means there is a solution and we can help you find it by uncovering the root cause of your depression. During your intake, we will look at all possible reasons for your depression. We catch physical symptoms, like eating, sleeping, and living patterns. Spiritually, we look into anger, bitterness, resentment, unforgiveness, and/or other life circumstances. Mentally, sometimes it is genetics that affects us, and other times it is growing up with negative core beliefs. No matter where you fall on this spectrum, our therapists will give you practical tools that will help you to feel better and to have hope again.

Is medication the answer for my depression?

Maybe. Interestingly enough, most clients that we see are ok with other people taking medication but not themselves. We will not force or promote medication as the only path to wellness yet we will let you know if it is an option you should highly consider. If we discover that you are predisposed genetically, then we do believe that medication combined with therapy will give you the best results for your treatment. Even in this instance, if you prefer, we will give you holistic ways to treat depression before recommending medication.

What can you look forward to?

For those of us with depression, it can be hard to remember what aspects of life we might be missing.  Here is a short list of things that you can look forward to:

  • Feeling motivated again

  • Be able to recognize negative thoughts and shift them to change your mindset

  • Have a hopeful outlook on life

  • Get to the root problems and feel like you have the coping skills to solve them

  • Take back control of your life

  • Dream again for the future

This list is by no means exhaustive. Your renewed hope and imagination may help you rediscover parts of yourself that have been forgotten or neglected, or it may spark new paths in life that bring you joy and satisfaction. Our therapists desire a world where you feel better and have the life you want.

If we should find that we at Remain Connected may not be enough to fully address your depression, we have a list of psychiatrists who we trust to whom we can refer you. You are not alone and we will do everything we can to ensure that you are cared for and given every opportunity to triumph. The fact that you are seeking professional help is a big step in the right direction!
