Overview: We cannot fall into the kind of thinking that we are too old to process our trauma or that we should be fine by now because it happened so long ago. It’s time to shift your thinking— You are too important and valuable to live a life without the transformation and supernatural inner healing God has for you.
People often tell me that, "It has taken me (insert number of years here) to come to counseling. And now that I am here, I want everyone to know!" This blog post is for those in their 40s and 50s, a demographic often hesitant to seek support. I want you to know that it is never too late to start counseling.
I heard a quote by Lisa Bevere that said, “What you do not heal in your 20s will come out in your 40s.” I have found this to be true and so comforting. Comforting because God wants you to heal no matter what stage of life you are in. Healing does not have an age limit. Whether you've carried trauma from early childhood, navigated anxious attachments, or wrestled with parental abandonment, the opportunity for healing remains. Maybe you think that it has been too long to process everything… I am here to tell you that it is not. Maybe you think you are too busy or too stuck in your ways to seek help… I am here to tell you that truly anyone can do it. It has been a true joy to sit with individuals who want to finish this race called life as their best self. That person can be you, too.
There's a common misconception that time alone can mend old wounds. Or maybe you think that it has been so long that you just shouldn’t feel bad about it anymore! Yet, as Kris Vallotton aptly points out, "If time heals all wounds, then prisoners would be the most whole and healthy people." This reality challenges us to reject the notion that we're too old to confront past pains or that we should have moved on by now.
Let's embrace a mindset shift—one that recognizes our inherent worth and the transformative power of inner healing.
Many middle-aged adults carry the weight of painful memories, resulting in chronic stress and unhealthy relationships. Stress can manifest as physical problems, such as sleep disturbances, weight gain, or even high blood pressure. However, the process of emotional healing holds the key to alleviating the burden of stress. You can learn the tools to foster improved physical health and enriched relationships. Who doesn’t want that?
We cannot fall into the kind of thinking that we are too old to process our trauma or that we should be fine by now because it happened so long ago. It’s time to shift your thinking— You are too important and valuable to live a life out of the transformation and supernatural inner healing God has for you.
So, if you find yourself grappling with unresolved emotions or carrying the weight of past experiences, I want to encourage you—it is never too late for healing, and you are deserving of it. Take that courageous step forward, knowing that support and transformation await.
As a faith-based counselor serving the Atlanta area, it brings me immense joy to walk alongside individuals who are committed to finishing the race of life well. Regardless of where you find yourself on this journey, know that you are not alone. Your desire for healing is both valid and achievable.
I encourage you to think about the things that hold you back in life. What stops you from showing up as the person you want to be? What hinders you from experiencing your relationships in a fulfilling way? When did you start to feel this way?
Now, think about the reasons you have never tried therapy. Might they all boil down to certain fears that you have had for as long as you can remember? Can you trace back the feeling of shame, or being stuck, or not being valuable enough back to a certain memory from the past?
Once again, it is never too late to heal. It is NEVER too late for you. And God would never give up on you, so don't give up on yourself!
In conclusion, remember this: Your journey toward healing is a testament to your resilience and the unwavering love of a higher power. Embrace it, embrace yourself, and know that the best is yet to come.
