PTSD Therapy in Georgia

By Claudia Pittard, Remain Connected Graduate Intern

Trauma is a lasting emotional response to a distressing event that can impact mental, physical, social, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Trauma can stem from a variety of experiences—abuse, accidents, medical procedures, loss of a loved one, or even witnessing violence. The impact of these experiences often affects one’s sense of safety, identity, and ability to regulate emotions.

What is PTSD?

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a condition that many people experience, but it is often misunderstood. PTSD may develop after a person goes through or witnesses trauma, leading to symptoms like:

  • Intense flashbacks or nightmares

  • Hypervigilance and feeling “on edge”

  • A sense of detachment from life, loved ones, or even God

  • Anxiety, particularly in social or high-stress situations

Trauma impacts the brain and body, making it difficult to feel safe, trust others, or regulate emotions. PTSD can make a person feel like their life is no longer under their control. Experiencing PTSD symptoms does not reflect a lack of faith or personal strength—it is a normal, human response to an overwhelming event. Recognizing the signs and seeking help is an act of courage and the first step toward healing.

The Path Towards Healing from PTSD

At Remain Connected Counseling, we offer faith-based, trauma-informed care by combining Christian principles with evidence-based practices to support those navigating PTSD. Trauma affects the body as much as the mind, and healing requires addressing both.

  • Grounding: Grounding techniques, such as feeling your feet on the ground or noticing the weight of your body in a chair, can help you stay in the present moment during flashbacks or moments of anxiety. Trauma gets “stuck” in the body. When you’ve experienced a traumatic event, your body often holds onto that stress in the form of tension, chronic pain, or anxiety. Grounding exercises can help reconnect you with your body in a safe way.

  • Mindfulness: Trauma affects the nervous system, often leaving people in a state of fight-or-flight long after the event is over. Learning to regulate your nervous system is key to healing. Mindfulness practices—such as breathing exercises or focusing on the present moment—can help shift the brain and body out of this survival mode and into a place of calm.

  • Prioritizing Normal Rhythms: Trauma can disrupt basic daily rhythms—eating well, getting sleep, and practicing regular self-care. Simple routines, such as healthy meals, good hygiene, and gentle movement, can be healing for the body and mind. Grounding yourself in these ordinary moments of life to restore a sense of normalcy. Set aside time each day for rest, nourishing meals, and mindful movement.
