Many individuals try to avoid change. I hate to break it to you, but change is not something you can escape. Whether it’s something you planned, but it did not turn out how you thought, or something that you did not anticipate and you want to make the most of the situation, change is bound to happen.
Change can be both positive, such as having a child, or negative, such as the death of a loved one. Whether it’s a positive or negative change, it requires a readjustment in your life, and there are many ways to cope with change in a healthy way that could end up being an opportunity for growth. You will have less anxiety and depression, stronger relationships, and feel less stressed.
Emotions that Come with Change
Whether change is good or bad, there are many emotions that may come change. It is normal to have varied emotions throughout change, but it is important to be aware of your emotions and learn how to handle them in a healthy way. You might want to consider keeping a journal throughout life transitions to keep track of your emotions. This way, you could always look back on your story and see if you have made any progress over time. Additionally, processing your negative emotions allows you to take steps forward. Also, if you are a Christian, you could journal how God has been faithful. In difficult life circumstances, this is a great way to be reminded of the Lord’s faithfulness even amidst trials.
Seven Ways to Handle Change
Because change is inevitable, here is a list of ways to stay grounded and handle change in a healthy way.
Stick to your normal routine. Amidst change, it is important to find some stability in your life. Whether that is getting organized or sticking to your morning or bedtime routine, it is essential to establish some consistency in your life because it can bring comfort in the chaos.
Focus on self-care. Whether that includes exercise, healthy eating habits, getting a good night’s sleep, taking a warm bath, or getting a massage, taking care of yourself, and practicing self-compassion can improve your well-being and lower your stress levels.
Focus on the present. When life feels out of control, it is important to stay in the moment. There are many ways to do this including focusing on your breathing and practicing mindfulness or meditation techniques. You could also keep a gratitude journal and write down three things a day that you are thankful for. If you are grieving, it is still important to celebrate the positives.
Use change as a chance to reconsider. Change can be a great time to reevaluate what is most important to you. Because change can threaten your comfort and security, it can provide a new perspective in which you can reassess your beliefs, relationships, and goals and adjust them if needed.
Sit with Your Emotions. As I discussed earlier, to move forward with change, it is important to sit with and process your feelings, especially if you are dealing with grief or loss. This could be journaling your thoughts, talking with a friend, joining a support group, or seeking support from a mental health professional.
Surround yourself with friends and family. You were made to live in connection with others. Especially in life transitions, it is important to seek support from your loved ones and surround yourself with those you love most. Research shows that relationships are a major source of happiness.
Give Yourself Grace. Lastly, there is only so much that you can control. Make sure to give yourself grace. You do not have to have everything figured out immediately.
